A Year of Action: A First-Year LAP Team’s Experiences
Herricks Teachers Association LAP Journey Begins
What happens after the summer training ends?
This past July, Herricks Teachers Association took part in their first year of NYSUT’s Local Action Project (LAP), a three-year program that helps local leadership develop the tools they need to take on their biggest challenges, including member recruitment, retention, team building and political action.
Convening alongside twelve locals from around the state, HTA members learned how to effectively work together, completely shifting their perspective on organizing, advocacy, and community building.
But the real work doesn't stop when the summer ends. Over the next 12 months, HTA President Heather Evers will be bringing you behind the scenes to document exactly how we’re putting those LAP strategies into practice.
Leaving LAP: Looking Towards the Future
Leaving LAP: Looking Towards the Future
On the final day of the 2026 Local Action Project, Herricks Teachers Association President, Heather Evers, shares how "many hands make light work.” Among all the lessons and community building, Evers is walking away with a camera to capture the next year of HTA’s work. In the first week back to school, Evers and the HTA made it a mission to connect with members, handing out goodie bags and having building reps meet with members face-to-face. An added bonus? Bringing members together to actually pack the bags, making the work easier and more fun.
Diary Entry: Building a Union Strong Presence at Homecoming
Herricks Teachers Association Local President, Heather, shares how her local worked to ensure there was a strong union presence at Herricks’s homecoming event:
“Homecoming came early this year. So, because of that, we were trying to make a big push to get a lot of our members to come to the game and we also worked with our district and ordered 300 of these foam fingers to hand out that had our logo on it.
I was nervous before the game because I was wondering if anyone was going to show up because we hadn't heard back from a lot of people when we sent out sign-up sheets to attend the game. It was so exciting because we not only had a big group of people to hand out the foam fingers, but there were members up at the parade and lined up with their banners for their schools.
We had to have at least 40, 50 people there, and it was awesome. Herricks Homecoming 2026, Success!”
